Lowell Cunningham created the Malibu Comics series based on the ufology boogie men in the early '90s. Film always goes for crowd-friendly, and the darker aspects (social engineering, witness assassination, and the supernatural) were swapped for an absurdist comedy more akin to Ghostbusters than The Hidden. Smart jokes sold the sci-fi, on the chemistry of its two leads, and the movie was a massive curveball success.
